Sara Palin thinks Alaskans will benefit as she "steps into a new role". That's the truth......Alaska will benefit, but not the way Palin thinks. There IS a better life for Alaska after Palin.

Palin's ability to ignore science, in order to create her own, is indicative of her willingness to say one thing and do another, or in the case of polar bears, cite one thing, and really have no evidence to back it up.

In Bush's last year in office, his interior department sought to list the polar bear as a threatened species. Palin challenges the proposal saying it would threaten oil and gas development in the region and said there was not enough evidence to support the listing.

Before Palin earned her phd in "ecology" the USDS did a study which found that the continued erosion of sea ice, on which polar bears depend, could lead to a severe reduction in their numbers by the year 2050.

Obama goes along with Bushs plan for Polar Bear Extinction

In life-threatening move for polar bears last Friday, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar announced he would endorse a Bush policy condemning the polar bear to extinction instead of rescinding the rule as requested by Congress. Salazar ignored hundreds of thousands of citizen petitions -- more than 94,000 of them from Center for Biological Diversity supporters -- plus letters from scores of lawmakers, 44 law professors, more than 130 conservation organizations, and more than 1,300 prominent scientists. The rule specifically exempts greenhouse gas emissions from Endangered Species Act review even though global warming is driving the polar bear extinct.

"Salazar's decision today is a gift to Big Oil," declared the Center's Biodiversity Program Director Noah Greenwald. We're already in court fighting the bad polar bear rule and will soon press for an injunction to bar its use.

Today is a day to celebrate. The European Union has slammed shut the door on trade in the products of the commercial seal slaughter.

The Canadian government tried with all their might, to derail the ban: massive lobbying, misinformation, and even threats of trade reprisals. But the EU stood its ground and honored its citizens’ opposition to this trade in cruelty. By doing so, the EU has saved millions of seals from a horrible fate.

Every year, the ProtectSeals team has endured hazardous conditions to document the seal hunt. They are committed to showing the world that the Canadian government is lying when it claims that the hunt is humane.

On their trips to the ice, the ProtectSeals team brought key opinion shapers such as Paul McCartney and Swedish Member of the European Parliament Carl Schlyter. After their trips, neither has wavered in speaking out against the hunt. Shortly after his trip to the ice, Schlyter drafted the first version of today’s EU ban. Their hunt footage was directly responsible for convincing the rest of the EU to agree to the ban. The ProtectSeals team didn't just document the hunt, they made history!

This is the beginning of the end for the Canadian seal hunt.

The Canadian government estimates that losing this primary market will cost Canada’s sealing industry $6.6 million (CAD) each year. The hunt brought in less than $7 million last year. It's not hard to do the math.

Just the promise of an EU ban was enough to drive the prices for seal fur down to $15 (CAD) per skin -- a decline of 86 percent since 2006. As a result, many sealers stayed home. Out of this year's quota of 280,000 harp seals, fewer than 60,000 have been killed so far.

Now that the EU has banned its trade in seal products, countless more seals will live their lives in peace from this year forward.

What’s Next?
Canadian seal hunt supporters won’t give up just yet. With government subsidies still in hand, the sealing industry will be chasing down new markets. The ProtectSeals campaign is working to convince all targeted nations to follow the EU’s example.
They're keeping the pressure on the Canadian fishing industry and government with the global boycott of Canadian seafood products. Since the boycott began, the Canadian fishing industry has suffered a $750 million (CAD) drop in the value of snow crab exports alone to the United States.

Canadian Senator Mac Harb has introduced his nation’s first bill to end the hunt. The ProtectSeals campaign is striving to convince other members of Canada's Parliament to support the bill.

Saving The Ribbon Seal

The uniquely patterned ribbon seal, long the most elusive and least understood of the true seals, is breathtakingly beautiful with its slender body, huge black eyes, and striking bands of white fur. It also has a special affinity for the ice, using the edge of the sea ice in Alaskan and Russian seas for rearing pups, molting, and resting. But as global warming accelerates, so does the alteration of the species’ sea-ice habitat. Without sufficient ice, this pretty pinniped will be more than elusive: It could be lost forever.

To ensure the ribbon seal’s perseverance, the Center for Biological Diversity, submitted a petition to the National Marine Fisheries Service in December 2007 requesting federal protection under the Endangered Species Act. Responding to their petition a few months later, the Fisheries Service announced that it would review the status of the ribbon seal, as well as that of three other ice-dependent seals. Unfortunately, in December 2008 the agency denied the ribbon seal protection, ignoring scientists’ disturbing predictions about the dramatic, near-future decline of its sea-ice habitat in the Bering and Okhotsk seas — so in spring 2009, The Center filed a notice of intent to sue.

Though ribbon seals have always been threatened by many human activities, including shipping, oil and gas development, and even hunting, global warming is likely to prove the worst threat of all. If greenhouse gas emissions continue as usual, scientists say that sea ice in the seal’s range could decline 40 percent by mid-century, leading to widespread pup mortality. Ribbon Seals can live to be 30 years old.

"The Arctic is in crisis state from global warming," said Shaye Wolf, a biologist with the Center for Biological Diversity.

"An entire ecosystem is rapidly melting away and the ribbon seal is poised to become the first victim of our failure to address global warming," he said.

But Wolf says that this winter the sea-ice habitat is rapidly disappearing. "If current ice-loss trends due to global warming continue, the ribbon seal faces likely extinction by the end of the century," he says.

The ribbon seal's winter sea ice habitat is projected to decline 40 percent by mid-century under recent greenhouse gas emissions trends, Wolf says.

In Wolf's view there is still reason to hope for their survival.

"With rapid action to reduce carbon dioxide, methane and black carbon emissions, combined with a moratorium on new oil and gas development and shipping routes in the Arctic, we can still save the ribbon seal, the polar bear, and the Arctic ecosystem," he said. "But the window of opportunity to act is closing rapidly."

He points out that warming in the Arctic now is occurring at a pace so rapid that is exceeding the predictions of the most advanced climate models.

"Summer sea-ice extent in 2007 plummeted to a record minimum which most climate models forecast would not be reached until 2050," Wolf observed. "Winter sea ice declined to a minimum in 2007 that most climate models forecast would not be reached until 2070."

The Judge Ordered The Jaguar Protection!

A break for jaguars,........ the Center for Biological Diversity just this morning won their court case to throw out the federal government's decision to deny critical habitat and a recovery plan for jaguars in the United Sates.

That means there is a new chance to save jaguars with the two crucial tools needed for the fight against their extinction in this country. It means that by next year the federal government has to issue a new decision on jaguar protection - one that respects the science and the species' survival needs.

And it could very well mean the reintroduction of jaguars to the United States - just as the Center's very first lawsuit, way back in 1989, forced the Fish and Wildlife Service to reintroduce the Mexican wolf. One day jaguars like Macho B, who died unnecessarily less than a month ago due to mismanagement, may live free and thrive again in the American Southwest. Imagine that.

Jaguar Court Coming Up!

On March 23, the Center for Biological Diversity's lawyers and scientists will be in a federal court seeking to force the federal government to prepare a recovery plan for the endangered jaguar and protect its habitat, especially travel corridors between the United States and Mexico.

The Obama administration has REFUSED to rescind the Bush-era decision to abandon recovery of the jaguar, so this court case has become a last-chance, high-stakes referendum on the fate of North America's largest cat. If the Center wins, jaguar populations will be restored in the United States. If they lose, the United States WILL LIKELY NEVER have a jaguar population again and the fate of the species will be left in the hands of failing conservation efforts in Central and South America.

Last Known U.S. Jaguar Euthanized

Macho B was euthanized March 2nd, 2009 in Phoenix Arizona. He was the first wild jaguar to be caught and fitted with a radio-collar in the United States, and also the only known jaguar to be living here. Well, Macho B was captured on February 18th, by accident, in an Arizona Game and Fish Department trap, released, and then was recaptured and euthanized after he was found to be suffering from kidney failure.

The population of northern jaguars once ranged from the Bay Area of California to the Appalachian Mountains and only four have been photographed in the U.S. since 1996. Macho B was the oldest known jaguar in the wild, and was around 16 years old. The age was estimated.

The Center for Biological Diversity says "There is a post-mortem investigation to determine what caused the jaguar's death". Ummm, I think they are forgetting that the jag was euthanized. I think they mean to say that there is an investigation to determine why Macho B's kidneys were failing. They don't know whether stress from repeated captures and sedation caused the weak kidney to fail, or whether it was something else.
Now read this..........."The Center has been protecting the jaguar for nearly 15 years, and the emotional and scientific loss of this one-of-a-kind animal, Macho B, comes just weeks before the Center will be arguing its jaguar case in federal district court in Tucson, AZ. The case is against a Bush-era U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service refusal to develop a recovery plan and designate critical habitat for the jaguar." Thanks again for nothing Bush! (so glad you're gone)
The death of Macho B is a sad and terrible loss for the recovery of the jaguar, but the Center for Biological Diversity is going to work to secure long-term science-based protections for this magnificent endangered big cat. Their current court case seeks a recovery plan that would lay out the least intrusive means of getting information needed for jaguar recovery, and the means to increase and protect the population. They will argue their jaguar case in court on March 23.

I've heard it said, that around the year 2020 we will have no more polar bears........and so this jaguar story makes me think of when the headlines will be......."Last remaining polar bear dies". Everybody waits too long!

Commercial trading of ivory has been banned since 1989, but U.S. hunters are allowed to import elephant trophies from countries including South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia and Tanzania. You have to obtain a permit, but this hunting of elephants is perfectly legal. The local people buy their flesh to eat and their hides and ears are imported into the United States, where collectors buy artwork painted on them, not batting an eye on the sad, horrific truth of where, how and off of what, these hides and ears came from..............but keep in mind trading of ivory is still banned. Does NOT make sense! Murder a majestic animal and be able to sell the hide, and ears as long as the ivory is not traded.

For an average price of several thousand dollars, one can purchase a piece of art, depicting a scene of Africa or its people, or perhaps a portrait of one of these magnificent creatures themselves, all painted on a five-foot tall ear of what was once a majestic animal.

Elephants have been on this planet for 60 million years, and in the wild, a herd of elephants will live together all of their lives and can live to the ripe old age of seventy years, if people will let them.
Elephants often care for other elephants young and they feel the pain when one of their own kind die.......they mourn their dead. They are wonderful, beautiful, majestic creatures.

I would rather pay several thousand dollars to go see elphants in their home land, wild and free instead of a picture painted on what once was their ear.

There are only three species of elephants on this planet while their used to be 160 species of elephants. All three species that are left are endangered. We have been warned by researchers that by the year 2020, there could be no elephants left in the wild. We are going to lose them forever, we are warned, but they continue to be hunted.....not just for their tusks, but their flesh, hide and EARS. "Their"....belonging to "them".

A Huge Victory For Animals

19 former employees of Aviagen Turkeys Inc. were issued felony cruelty to animals charges by a grand jury. This stems from a well publicized undercover investigation of the factory farm by members of People for the Ethical of Animals. A felony cruelty to animals charge has never been issued before in a case involving birds being abused at a factory farm.

From what I read, birds who are abused in factory farms are exempt from cruelty to animals charges.

A PETA member went on an undercover investigation, by working for a number of turkey factory-farms owned by Aviagen in West Virginia. During this investigation, employees of Aviagen were found stomping on turkeys' heads, punching turkeys, hitting them on the head with pliers and cans of spray paint, and even striking turkeys' heads against metal scaffolding.

Men shoved feces and feed into turkeys' mouths and held turkeys' heads under water! One man bragged about jamming a broom stick 2 feet down a turkey's throat. One man said he saw workers kill 450 turkeys with 2 x 4's, and another man said he saw a co-worker fatally inject sulfuric acid into turkeys' heads.

President Obama has decided to ban torture on human beings during military interrogations. Every year, thousands of live animals are shot, stabbed, dismembered, burned, and poisoned in Department of Defense (DOD) training exercises! It's trauma and chemical-casualty training exercises conducted on animals. That is torturous! This program is designed to train medics and infantry in how to treat various human battlefield injuries. PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) asked President Obama to issue an executive order requiring the DoD to replace animals with non-animal methods. These methods are readily available and already in use at several military installations. The non-animal methods include rotations in military trauma hospitals and the use of the DoD's own Combat Trauma Patient Simulator.

Bad Bush Moves Are Halted......

President Obama started his administration this week announcing a freeze of all the Bush administration's last minute, biodiversity-harming rules not yet put into print. The new administration will get a chance to hopefully trash all the bad policy decisions from the Bush-era, including the heinous removal of Endangered Species Act protections from gray wolves in the northern Rocky Mountains and Great Lakes regions.

I don't think Bush didn't any good for anything. I cannot believe he was allowed to stay President for 8 years. I sure in the heck can't believe that he was re-elected!

Governor Sarah Palin just announced she's making the state of Alaska sue to strike down Endangered Species Act protection for the imperiled Cook Inlet beluga whale. The rare white whale's population has already plummeted from thousands to just 375. They will certainly go extinct if Palin has her way.

This isn't the first time Palin tried to sacrifice endangered species. Last August, after a Center for Biological Diversity-led campaign won federal protection for the polar bear, she filed suit to strike the protections down in order to make things easier for Big Oil in the Arctic.

The Center for Biological Diversity has lawyers and scientists in court already to block Palin's anti-polar bear actions, and they'll do the same to save the beluga. What IS her problem?

The Center says, "Apparently, it's not enough for Palin to promote the shooting of wolves from helicopters. Her bloodthirsty attitude towards wildlife extends to wiping out whole species that are barely surviving. She is going after endangered animals with missionary zeal, ignoring government scientists and running roughshod over the law."

Brendan Cummings, is the Center of Biological Diversity's master legal strategist on saving marine mammals. He says, "Governor Palin must be suffering from an Ahab complex. She has an irrational obsession with driving the white whale extinct."

Palin has demonstrated a complete lack of concern over the plight of endangered species,"

Beluga whales swimming in Cook Inlet, a glacier-fed saltwater channel running from Anchorage to the Gulf of Alaska, numbered as high as 1,300 three decades ago, but has dropped to about 375 since then. They need to be protected! Palin said Alaska believes the Endangered Species Act protections for belugas announced in October by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration are unwarranted.

Just 5 months ago Alaska's government sued to keep polar bears off the U.S. threatened species list. And now Alaska's government said Wednesday it plans to issue a similar challenge to block federal protections for the struggling population of beluga whales in Cook Inlet, a mature oil-producing basin.

In 2007 alone, Wildlife Services killed 2.4 million animals, including 121,565 carnivores. The agency reported it spent more than $100 million in 2007 to kill wildlife, most of which was funded by taxpayers. Among those animals killed in 2007: 90,262 coyotes, 2,277 gray foxes, 2,412 red foxes, 2,090 bobcats, 1,133 cats, 552 dogs, 577 badgers, and 340 gray wolves.

”‘Wildlife Services’ is a perfectly Orwellian name for an agency that serves wildlife with cyanide baits, lead bullets, and steel leghold traps,” said Michael Robinson, conservation advocate for the Center for Biological Diversity in Silver City, N.M. Robinson is the author of a detailed history of the agency titled Predatory Bureaucracy: The Extermination of Wolves and the Transformation of the West (University Press of Colorado, 2005).

Shocked? I am.

A coalition of 115 conservation, animal protection, ranching and religious organizations on Friday submitted a letter to Tom Vilsack, the Agriculture Secretary nominee, urging him to end the federal government’s systematic killing of wildlife, including wolves, coyotes, bears, cougars and prairie dogs.

Members of the coalition--comprised of Big Wildlife, Center for Biological Diversity, Creation Care Study Program, Christians for Environmental Stewardship, Humane Society of the United States, Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility, Sierra Club, and Ranchers for Rural Responsibility, among many others--said that each year the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Wildlife Services kills millions of wild animals, primarily on behalf of agribusiness.

Coalition members said halting the agency’s “lethal control” programs should be one of the nominee’s first steps once he is confirmed as Secretary of Agriculture. The group claims the USDA Wildlife Services employs a variety of cruel and often haphazard methods to kill wildlife, including shooting from airplanes and helicopters, poisoning, gassing dens, bludgeoning after capture and strangling in wire snares.

“Wildlife Services has much blood on its hands. The agency is committing crimes against animals that make Michael Vick’s Bad Newz Kennels look like doggy day care,” said Brian Vincent, communications director for the wildlife protection group Big Wildlife.

Many non-lethal solutions are less expensive and more effective at reducing conflicts than killing, coalition members said. Ranchers who use guard dogs, llamas, burros, or who mix cattle and sheep report fewer or no predation problems. Nighttime penning, penning during lambing and calving season, and removing livestock carcasses from pastures also reduce conflicts. In addition, strobes and sirens are effective for preventing predation.

Members of the groups said that monies spent on killing wildlife would be better used to educate and aid ranchers, farmers, and others to upgrade their fencing or assist them with utilizing non-lethal techniques. Eliminating subsidized domestic-animal grazing on public lands would sharply reduce encounters with carnivores, they said.

The description for the shirt includes "Sarah Palin is a crazy anti-environment embarrassment to Alaska". Those are my thoughts exactly! My dream is to one day see Alaska........and see it before Sara Palin gets done with it. It's no wonder she grew up killing.....I read that she killed her first moose at the age of 10.

This picture I found of Palin on Grizzly Bay.org I think killing animals runs through her veins. I'll never be able to understand how someone can look so happy standing over the dead animal they just killed.

Climate Change Killing Minnesota Moose

Now.......... Minnesota has its own iconic species in danger of extinction from global warming: the moose. This month, wildlife specialists gathered in Duluth for a "moose summit" to address the fact that in just two decades, northwestern Minnesota's moose population has plummeted from 4,000 to fewer than 100 knobby-kneed but majestic cervids. According to one population biologist, if the current trends continue, moose will be gone from Minnesota in 50 years. The reason for the dramatic decline? Over the past 40 years, the average winter temperature in the region has risen 12 degrees, with summers 4 degrees warmer -- and moose need shade, water, and cool weather to survive.

As fright about the fate of Minnesota's moose mounts, the Bush administration has changed the Endangered Species Act to prohibit federal agencies from evaluating global warming's endangered species effects. Hopefully, the next administration won't ignore the moose's plight.

General description: This big game animal is dark brown to black with a shoulder hump and a flap of skin or "bell" that hangs below its throat. It has long legs, big eyes and the males have antlers.

I know Obama won the election, but I just can't quit dis-liking Sara Palin for what she is. I'm all about helping to stop the barbaric aerial hunting of wolves and bears, and Palin is the one that allows it. Alaska is truly our nation's last frontier. It is also the last place in the U.S. where a few hunters still use aircraft to chase and kill wolves. They shoot these animals from the air or chase them to exhaustion before landing and shooting them point blank.

Congress passed a law thirty five years ago to put an end to aerial hunting. But Alaska is exploiting a loophole in federal law to resume the practice, not only for wolves, but bears as well. Hundreds of scientists have condemned what Alaska is doing, even as other states threaten to follow Alaska's lead. It's time to stop aerial hunting once and for all.

Rep. George Miller (CA) has introduced the Protect America's Wildlife (PAW) Act, legislation to close a federal loophole and curb Alaska's brutal aerial hunting program -- and prevent programs like it from spreading to places like the Greater Yellowstone region. Ok, listen.........after Peta (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) exposed Donna Karan's use of fur, Karan announced that all her Fall 2009 lines will be fur-free and that she has "no plans" to use fur in the future! Yippeeee!

Karan's decision comes just days after peta2 launched their online campaign to try to get Karan to change her ways. Tim Gunn Project Runway's mega–fashion guru, sent Karan and designer Giorgio Armani a video that he narrated for peta2 showing animals skinned alive for their fur and urged them to open their eyes to the violent and bloody fur industry.

While Donna Karan has followed in the footsteps of top designers—including Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, and Calvin Klein—Peta says Armani still refuses to stop using fur. Armani claims that he "only" uses fur from rabbits who are butchered for meat. We can contact Armani to tell him that while the meat of gentle rabbits killed for their fur in China is sold to be eaten, the suffering that they endure is exactly the same. Point out that the cruelty depicted in this video of fur farms in both China and France show animals who are used for both fur and meat.

The world is now just a little bit safer for fur-bearing animals.

President-elect Obama chose former Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack for Secretary of Agriculture.
Me, and nearly 90,000 other animal advocates contacted the Obama transition team through the Humane Society of the United States' website, expressing our views on how important it was to pick an animal-friendly Agriculture Secretary and recommending Vilsack as an excellent choice. The Obama Administration must have really listened to our views. This demonstrates the importance of the animal advocates voices and what we can do.
As Iowa Governor, Vilsack vetoed a bill to allow the shooting of mourning doves—an act that has saved more than a million doves from target shooting in the years since. He has a solid record on animal protection.
I can't wait to see what he will do about puppy mills, factory farming, predator control, the use of animals in research and testing, and other issues that have compromised animal welfare.

Today, (December 11, 2008) just hours ago, The Center for Biological Diversity, along with Defenders of Wildlife and Greenpeace, filed a lawsuit to strike down Bush's gutting of the Endangered Species Act, in an attempt to nullify Bush's policies as quickly as possible. The Center says, "We'll keep fighting until the Bush nightmare is over."

At the time of this blog there are 39 days, 16 hours, 51 minutes, 59 seconds left until Bush leaves office!!!!

The Center also says, "As an early Christmas gift to industry, Bush's policies exempted greenhouse gas emissions from coal-fired power plants, oil and gas drilling, and other harmful developments from the Endangered Species Act. Having just listed the polar bear and two Florida corals as endangered species due to global warming in response to Center lawsuits, the Bush administration is now trying to handcuff federal regulators and the law by preventing actions needed to save these and other endangered species.
And if that weren't bad enough, Bush also exempted tens of thousands of logging, mining, road building and development projects from Endangered Species Act review. Rather than have U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service scientists independently review these actions, the Bush policy allows the agencies proposing the logging and mining to do the review themselves. In its typical pattern of denial and abuse, the Bush administration ignored the fact that this policy has already been tried and failed. In timber sales exempted from scientific review between 2004 and 2005, a full 68 percent violated the Endangered Species Act, harming spotted owls, salmon, and other species.
Unfortunately, there are more bad regulations affecting clean air, clean water and our oceans coming down the pipe. The Center will remain vigilant in challenging these last ditch attempts by the lame-duck administration to undermine our bedrock environmental law."

Now, I'm off to go find one of them countdown clocks for when Bush leaves office.

Wayne Pacelle, President & CEO of The Humane Society of the United States sent out e-mails today on how and what, we people can do to help end the cruel slaughter of the Canadian seals.

Pacelle says, "Just yesterday, (December 2, 2008) The Fresh Market grocery store chain joined the campaign to stop the cruel Canadian seal hunt -- pledging to shift its seafood purchasing away from Canada until that country ends its seal hunt for good.

With more than 80 stores across 18 states, The Fresh Market joins grocers such as Whole Foods Market, BI-LO Supermarkets, Trader Joe's, Lowe's Food Stores, Harris Teeter, and WinCo Foods in pledging to stop buying seafood produced in Canada.

As we head into the holiday season, it is crucial that we maintain this momentum and reach out to grocers during this busy time -- please print and fill out this comment card for your local grocer -- and urge them to join the rapidly growing list of grocery stores and restaurants joining the ProtectSeals campaign. Take a look at this picture. Look at the cute, big eye's! This gremlin-like creature is suddenly found in Indonesia, after it was long thought by many to be extinct. Not a single living specimen had been found for over 78 years. It's a pygmy tarsier -- the planet's smallest and rarest primate. It's a tiny, adorable, primate native to Indonesia's misty mountaintops. Three of these little furby things, were found, this month (November, 2008). These mouse-sized mammals were discovered on Mount Rorekatimbo in Central Sulawesi. They have an uncanny resemblance to the Furby -- a furry, talking electronic toy. Center for Biological Diversity says, "Curious biologists are psyched about the creature's rediscovery because it's one of the most puzzling primate species, boasting claws instead of fingernails and seeming to use neither vocalizations nor scent marking to communicate." The pygmy tarsier is about 4 inches and weighs 2 ounces!!!

Help for the Kangaroo Rat......................

Now listen, this is not really a rat. This cute little guy is from San Bernardino California, and is an endangered species. I learned a little bit about this "rat" from the Center for Biological Diversity's website.

"The San Bernardino kangaroo rat is not a true rat but a small, seed-eating animal related to squirrels. It hops around on large hind legs like a kangaroo, which is how it got its name. It lives along the banks of creeks and dry streams where it helps to re-establish plants and habitat after floods by collecting and distributing seeds of local shrubs and flowers." A very useful little guy! "It is found only in Riverside and San Bernardino counties, although it was much more widespread just 50 years ago. Its habitat has recently been prime real estate for big-box warehouse development, so it now survives mainly in sandy and gravelly washes that periodically flood.

Bouncing around on its giant hind feet, the seed-eating San Bernardino kangaroo rat is highly adapted to southwestern deserts and the natural flood cycles found there. Though the kangaroo rats require only the moisture in their food to survive, the triple threat of dams, sand and gravel mining, and urban sprawl has driven these charismatic critters to the brink of extinction. Kangaroo rats are known to use their hind feet to create their very own Morse code to send warning signals to fellow rats, and what greater danger is there than the imposing habitat destruction wreaking havoc across Southern California?"

in SAN BERNARDINO, Calif.— "Conservationists filed a formal notice of intent to sue the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service over the agency’s slashing of critical habitat for the San Bernardino kangaroo rat. The Center for Biological Diversity, the San Bernardino Valley Audubon Society, and the Friends of the Northern San Jacinto Valley contend that the designation of only 7,779 acres of habitat – a 76 percent reduction from the 2002 designation of 33,295 acres – will drive this rare and declining animal closer to extinction."

Helping Farm Animals

Last week, thanks to me and tens of thousands of others, California’s Proposition 2 ushered in a new beginning for 20 million farm animals. The Humane Society of the United States say they are poised to build on the momentum of that landmark outcome -- and today, in my e-mail box, a letter from the president of the Humane Society of the United States arrives giving us the first opportunity to take the next step for farm animals.
Wayne Pacelle, from the H.S.U.S. says "President-elect Barack Obama is working to fill key positions in his administration over the next few weeks, among them the Secretary of Agriculture. With oversight of the Animal Welfare Act and the Humane Methods of Slaughter Act, the Secretary of Agriculture has a tremendous impact on the treatment of animals and the enforcement of a broad range of laws -- including those covering puppy mills, animal slaughter, animal fighting, and food safety."
He goes on to say "Past Secretaries have been too closely aligned with industry, and now it is time to appoint a Secretary who balances economic concerns with animal welfare, consumer safety, and environmental protection." In this letter that came in my e-mail box today he asks us to write President-elect Obama and urge him to appoint a Secretary of Agriculture who takes animal protection and consumer issues as seriously as issues confronting farm producers. I too, want President-elect Obama to consider the well-being of billions of animals when appointing this key position. So I'm asking those of you, to help me, help the H.S.U.S. to help ensure he makes the right choice.

The cold weather has come to Michigan City. I love autumn, it's my favorite season. Actually I like it better when the leaves are in full fall color. I'm not that in to raking anymore, as it has become a real chore in my yard with all the oak trees. But I really do like that cozy indoor feeling when the outside is cold. Cold weather makes good cozy sewing time.
I have just received my latest shipment of fabric, and I can't wait to start sewing with it. I really did pick out some cute fabrics this week! One bolt has blue birds and cardinals dressed in clothes, and turtles with luggage packed on their shells. Frogs are in their golf attire too. Voters in Massachusetts Say "Yes" to End Racing of Greyhounds!

The inhumane practice of Greyhound racing will be phased out by the year 2010. Thanks to the Bay State voters!
Since 2002, there have been 841 reported injuries at the two Massachusetts tracks, and 80 percent of those injuries were broken legs.
Grey2K USA, the MSPCA, and The Humane Society of the United States were the primary sponsors of Question 3, and The HSUS was the largest financial backer of the ballot measure.

This is the end for an industry that exploits dogs for profit and entertainment! Way to go Voters! This is a super fantastic win for dogs in the Bay state. Thank you Massachusettes.
Greyhounds on the trak endure lives of awful confinement, kept in small cages barely large enough to stand up or turn around. This is for 20 or more hours per day. In recent years, gambling at the only two greyhound race tracks in Massachusetts has declined.

U.S. to Ban Oil Drilling in New Arctic Reserves for Polar Bears

The U.S. Department of the Interior will designate two Arctic reserves in areas considered critical habitat for polar bears as part of a legal settlement with environmental groups, reports Reuters. The reserves will be off-limits of oil development and must be established by June 30, 2010. "If polar bears are to survive in a rapidly melting Arctic, we must protect their critical habitat, as well as protect individual bears stranded on land. This agreement sets us on the path to doing both," said Kassie Siegel, climate program director at the Center for Biological Diversity, one of three environmental groups that sued the Department of the Interior for failing to take action to protect the polar bear.
Center for Biological Diversity, along with Greenpeace and the Natural Resources Defense Council, now aims to use the threatened status of the polar bear to push for limits on greenhouse gas emissions, since climate change is a key threat to the species. The Arizona-based organization is also looking to elevate the bear's status from threatened to endangered based on recent studies from the U.S. Geological Survey showing that the species is more imperilled than previously thought. Declining sea ice is seen as a major threat to polar bears. Unlike grizzly bears, polar bears aren't adapted to hunting land animals like caribou, so loss of sea ice is making it more difficult for bears to find food. Several studies have documented declines in bear weight and cub survival in recent years.

In response to the Center for Biological Diversity's petition, the National Marine Fisheries Service is conducting a status review to determine whether three ice-dependent seals that inhabit Alaskan waters warrant protection under the Endangered Species Act. "This is the first important step toward protection for ringed, bearded, and spotted seals -- all of which are threatened with extinction by the rapid loss of their Arctic sea-ice habitat due to global warming.", says the Center.
Please let the Bush administration know that you support the protection of these seals, and that we must reduce greenhouse gas pollution immediately to slow global warming and save them from extinction.

Fashionable Penguins..............

I've found a picture of penguins running around in hand-knitted sweaters that looked like doggy sweaters. I guess the sweaters have a legitimate purpose. Penguins are dressed in the brightly-colored sweaters after an oil spill to keep them from preening and to keep them warm.
The sweaters are knit from volunteers around the world, and are then placed on penguins that have been doused in the slick oil, so that they can’t ingest it when they preen themselves. Sweaters are also placed on the penguins that have had the oil cleaned and scrubbed off of them, because the detergents strip away the natural oils penguins produce to keep warm.
So next time you’re disposing of your oil, do it in a safe way. One quart may not equal an oil spill, but every little drop can be harmful to the environment. Unprecedented Criminal Charges Filed Against Pig-Farm Supervisors And Workers!

Last month, they told us about their new undercover investigation on an Iowa pig farm that breeds piglets to supply Hormel. Their investigation revealed that pregnant pigs were confined to barren gestation crates, beaten with metal gate rods, and kicked by farm workers. Workers were documented shocking pigs and spraying toxic paint around their eyes and up their noses, and one supervisor even raped a pig with a cane. The Greene County Sheriff stated in a news release yesterday that six individuals employed by the farm at the time of PETA's investigation now face a total of 22 counts of livestock neglect and abuse. Those charged include a former farm manager and a supervisor. Fourteen of the counts are aggravated misdemeanors—the stiffest possible charges under Iowa state law for crimes committed against farmed animals—and each carry up to two years behind bars. Such charges are unprecedented. PETA is on the front lines, fighting as hard as ever to expose and end cruelty to animals. They won't let animal suffering and abuse be ignored or forgotten. Please take heart in the results of this investigation and the fact that your help and support makes this victory and everything that they do to help animals possible. PETA has had a cooperative relationship with Liz Claiborne Inc. for many years, and through their work together, the company has made—and continues to make—many great strides to reduce the suffering of animals who are used and abused in the clothing industry. Today they shared an exciting development that has resulted from their discussions with Liz Claiborne Inc.: Juicy Couture—a high-end clothing company owned by Liz Claiborne Inc.—has now adopted a permanent fur-free policy. While Juicy Couture is still selling some fur items that were stocked before this policy was adopted, it has assured Peta that no new fur items will be procured and that as soon as the current stock of fur items is gone, the company will be completely fur-free. Cook Inlet Beluga Whale Granted Protection Under Endangered Species Act

Great news in my e-mail box today from Center of Biological Diversity ..............

Breaking News! In response to the Center for Biological Diversity's lawsuit, the National Marine Fisheries Service today placed the Cook Inlet beluga whale on the federal endangered species list. The beluga certainly needs saving -- constant and growing exposure to toxic oil and gas pollution, urban development, and other pressures have caused the beluga's population to decline from about 1,300 to 375 since the 1990s.
To save the beluga, the Center for Biological Diversity and allies petitioned the administration in 2006 to list it as an "endangered species." We then sued the administration in June 2008 after it illegally took a six-month extension -- as requested by Alaska Governor Sarah Palin -- on its decision to protect the whale. And after it had already stalled for more than a year.
We're ecstatic about the victory -- but this is only the first step toward recovery for the Cook Inlet beluga. If the whale is to survive, it must have meaningful protections put in place. Federally protected "critical habitat" zones must be mapped out, and the polluted waters of Cook Inlet need to be protected and cleaned up.

According to a World Wildlife Fund report released last Friday, Antarctica's emperor and Adélie penguins could see major trouble after a global warming-caused temperature rise of just two degrees Celsius. Besides reducing populations of the penguins' food sources, including silverfish and krill, that temperature increase would melt Southern Ocean sea ice -- both penguins' preferred habitat -- by enough that half the emperor colonies and three-fourths of Adélie colonies north of 70 degrees south latitude would be "in jeopardy of marked decline or disappearance." Many climate models predict that Earth's average temperature could increase by two degrees Celsius within 40 years; we've already warmed an average of 0.6 degrees since the mid-19th century.

In 2006, the Center for Biological Diversity petitioned to protect the emperor and 11 other penguin species under the Endangered Species Act due primarily to global warming, and the next year the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service found that 10 of the 12 species may officially deserve protection. Now, the Service's final decision on protection is way overdue, but thanks to a Center lawsuit, it must complete its finding by December 19.

Half Of October Is Gone Already!

Has this year flown by, or what? It sure has for me. When I started sewing the Halloween scrubs it seemed as though Halloween was so far off. For those who have not ordered any new Halloween scrubs, you can still order them. You'll need to hurry though. At TopSpot4U you'll find prints you can wear up until Thanksgiving. I'm already sewing Holiday scrubs for Christmas for quite a few customers who decided not to wait until the last minute.
Here in Northern Indiana the leaves are really getting into color....it's so pretty at this time of year.......It's my favorite season!

The AVERAGE AMERICAN SOLDIER
The average age of the Infantryman is 19 years.
He is a short haired, tight-muscled kid who, under normal circumstances is considered by society as half man, half boy. Not yet dry behind the ears, not old enough to buy a beer, but old enough to die for his country.
He never really cared much for work and he would rather wax his own car than wash his father's; but he has never collected unemployment either.
He's a recent High School graduate; he was probably an average student, pursued some form of sport activities, drives a ten year old jalopy, and has a steady girlfriend that either broke up with him when he left, or swears to be waiting when he returns from half a world away.
He listens to rock and roll or hip-hop or rap or jazz or swing and 155mm Howitzers.
He is 10 or 15 pounds lighter now than when he was at home because he is working or fighting from before dawn to well after dusk.
He has trouble spelling, thus letter writing is a pain for him, but he can field strip a rifle in 30 seconds and reassemble it in less time in the dark.
He can recite to you the nomenclature of a machine gun or grenade launcher and use either one effectively if he must.
He digs foxholes and latrines and can apply first aid like a professional.
He can march until he is told to stop or stop until he is told to march.
He obeys orders instantly and without hesitation, but he is not without spirit or individual dignity.
He is self-sufficient. He has two sets of fatigues: he washes one and wears the other. He keeps his canteens full and his feet dry.
He sometimes forgets to brush his teeth, but never to clean his rifle.
He can cook his own meals, mend his own clothes, and fix his own hurts. If you're thirsty, he'll share his water with you; if you are hungry, his food. He'll even split his ammunition with you in the midst of battle when you run low.
He has learned to use his hands like weapons and weapons like they were his hands. He can save your life - or take it, because that is his job.
He will often do twice the work of a civilian, draw half the pay and still find ironic humor in it all. He has seen more suffering and death then he should have in his short lifetime.
He has stood atop mountains of dead bodies, and helped to create them.
He has wept in public and in private, for friends who have fallen in combat and is unashamed.
He feels every note of the National Anthem vibrate through his body while at rigid attention, while tempering the burning desire to 'square-away' those around him who haven't bothered to stand, remove their hat, or even stop talking. In an odd twist, day in and day out, far from home, he defends their right to be disrespectful.
Just as did his Father, Grandfather, and Great-grandfather, he is paying the price for our freedom.
Beardless or not, he is not a boy.
He is the American Fighting Man that has kept this country free for over 200 years.
He has asked nothing in return, except our friendship and understanding.
Remember him, always, for he has earned our respect and admiration with his blood.
